Changeling Pottery
Ceramic piece, a puzzlement,
as if discovered on a beach,
artifact from dream waters
speaking a language
with words adrift,
unmoored from the land of reason,
four folds below, three above
like petals of metallic rust,
symmetry more than off,
on ocean rose,
but only to enclose
above, below, a matte-blackened
mound the space of an eye,
but an eye in shape only,
its iris an offset white cup,
blue-veined, thimble-sized
for a pixie, unless it serves
as the eye of a fish
whose mouth forms on the right from loosened
petals of the ocean rose-
enough shape-shift to confound
the tyrant who rules our eyes,
our waking brain that chooses
what we see, how long we take
to see it - to recognize, move on.
Unlike a dream, elusive, diaphanous,
kiln-fired pottery will last,
a changeling vessel
fit to steer us to the world of tides,
our shifting wiser selves with time
to look and look again.
